Small Skipper & Essex Skipper - 14th July
An excellent opportunity at Horseshoe Plantation to compare Small Skipper with Essex Skipper by getting up close and taking some photos. The pictures were mostly taken before 9.00 a.m. when it was cooler and hence the butterflies were less prone to spend time on the wing whizzing around.

Fore Wood - 13th July
Another visit to Fore Wood near Crowhurst, this time early in the morning in the hope of seeing a Purple Hairstreak low down before they move higher up towards the top of the Oak trees. Just as I was about to give up a female landed next to me on some bracken and briefly settled before flying off. The Silver-washed Fritillary numbers are starting to slowly climb. Also found some pristine Peacock, Gatekeeper, Green-veined White, Ringlet and Comma.

Hollingbury Park, Brighton - 11th July
I was advised to go to Hollingbury Park in Brighton as the best place to see White-letter Hairstreaks. After a little bit of hunting around the Elms I found several male and female butterflies in the sun after 2.00 p.m.

Some fine specimens of Meadow Brown and Ringlet at Abbots Wood in addition to plentiful and fast flying Silver-washed Fritillaries.

Horseshoe Plantation & Fore Wood - 5th July
Spent the morning at Horseshoe Plantation - plenty of Marbled Whites some of which were mating. Also newly emerged Small Heaths and Gatekeepers and a Common Green Grasshopper. Round-headed Rampion and Autumn Gentian both in flower.
Fore Wood is a small woodland, owned by the RSPB, near the village of Crowhurst. When you enter the wood it is like going back in time - very quiet and peaceful - few people seem to visit this little gem. Bird highlights are Marsh Tit and Lesser-spotted Woodpecker whereas butterfly specialities are White Admiral, Purple Hairstreak and Silver-washed Fritillary. There is also a very good colony of Blue Damselfly.
