Warton Crag - 20th May
A first trip to the limestone outcrop at Warton Crag which is famous for its rich flora and fauna. We arrived ca. 10 a.m. just as it was beginning to warm up and the butterflies were taking to the air. As we walked up hill onto the Crag we spotted some Early Purple Orchids in full flower. On reaching the top it opened out into an extensive area covered with bracken where we saw our first Small Pearl-bordered Fritillaries - there may also have been some Pearl-bordered Fritillaries but none was positively identified. There were also several Dingy Skippers, a single Wall Brown and a single Northern Brown Argus. Other flowers included Hart's-tongue and Common Rock-rose.
