Horseshoe Plantation & Friston Forest - 2nd June

After the excitement of yesterday's Glanville Fritillary trip it was back down to earth at my 'patch'. One species I was determined to get to grips with this year in terms of photography was the Small Blue. At Horseshoe Plantation there is a small colony numbering only a few individuals. Today I found a pristine male which was happy to sit long enough to have his photograph taken. I also found a pair of mating Adonis Blues and a male Brown Argus. In the afternoon I set off to Friston Forest to find the White Helleborines. Last year I found a large number of plants but I was too late since they were all in seed. On this occasion the timing was perfect with hundreds of plants in flower. On one spike I counted 15 florets. This must be one of the largest colonies of White Helleborine, certainly in Sussex.
